The Republic Under Siege Arc is sadly an underwhelming and frustrating follow-up to Insurgency Rising. Adelhard's standalone story "Consolidation" was great, but the four issues were pretty disappointing and frustrating overall. Issues 2 and 4 are especially egregious with retcons and continuity errors.

The retcons first of all...oh God. They get far, far worse in Last Stand, but it all begins with Issue 2. For some reason, Gallius Rax told Sloane and the Shadow Council about the plan to head to Jakku to make their final stand. First of all, Rax would've never told any one of those Imperials the plan since the whole point in Life Debt and Empire's End is everyone from the New Republic and Imperial Remnants were surprised Rax's decision to bring as much of the Empire to Jakku to make their final stand. Second of all building off of the first point, Sloane like all Imperials had no idea of Jakku being Rax's plan for their final stand, and part of her plotline in Life Debt is trying to uncover Rax's origins with her expressing shock at Rax bringing the Empire to Jakku.

Building off of this retcon, in Issue 4, the New Republic knows about the Empire's last stand on Jakku through the Operator (who is really Rax but depending on when this issue takes place is Sloane) before Empire's End. The New Republic learns about the Empire's last stand on Jakku in Empire's End through Norra's team. Hell, the political subplot of that novel is about how Mothma's political rival used this new information to try to make Mothma look weak.

Rax was also not referred to as Counselor until Empire's End when he gave himself the title "Counselor to the Empire." Even Sloane commented about how Rax gave himself a new title.

A retcon from Insurgency Rising that I forgot to mention is how Rax didn't wear a Grand Admiral uniform until Empire's End and wore a Fleet Admiral uniform (it did get right that he wears a crimson cape in private). Another retcon (also continuing from Insurgency Rising) is how Adelhard seems to know about Yupe Tashu's loyalty to Rax and how he switched over to his camp...even though Yupe Tashu wasn't serving Rax until the end of Life's Debt when he escaped his prison.

And to think that there's most likely more I missed here is terrifying to think about.

Doctor Aphra and Valance were wasted in this arc. They were just to explain things and then just peace out of there. I do like Valance mentioning the player character (the Smuggler) from Uprising.

I have no idea why everyone, including Gallius Rax, thinks Adelhard is a threat. He does nothing to demonstrate why he's such a great threat, and it doesn't make for a good antagonist when all we hear is talk but nothing to prove why he's a threat.

I love how a friend described Adelhard falling in his escape pod as a metaphor for his ideology, beliefs, and plans literally crashing down. While I didn't like how it was executed before then, I liked the ending of the issue with Adelhard regarding how he realized something stronger than the Empire must emerge.

I didn't talk much about the actual plot because there's very little that's going on. Or rather, a lot is going on, but it doesn't feel impactful or worth talking about.

In short, this has been a very disappointing follow-up to Insurgency Rising. I feel like the only good thing this comic will be known for is the visual depictions of Aftermath Trilogy characters.

Solo: A Star Wars Story premiered on May 25th, 2018. The screenplay was by Jonathon and Lawrence Kasdan. Lawrence Kasden had previously scripted the Star Wars films Episode V: The Empire Strikes back, Episode VI The Return of the Jedi, and Episode VII The Force Awakens. There was some debate over who was going to be listed officially as director. Ultimately, Ron Howard, who reshot 80% of the original footage, was given credit and the original directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were given executive producer credits. The movie took place between Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story/Episode IV: A New Hope. The movie told how Han Solo (originally played by Harrison Ford, but in this version played by Alden Ehrenreich) left Corellia, joined the Emperial Infantry, met Chewbacca (originally played by Peter Mayhew, but in this version by Joonas Suotamo), became a smuggler, met Lando Calrissian (originally played by Billy Dee Williams, but in this version by Donald Glover), made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs, got his hand blaster, got the disguise that Lando would use in Jobba's palace, got the Millinium Falcon, and why the Millinium Falcon had a unique dialogue pattern. The film kept it as a surprise that it also had the first cinematic appearance of Darth Maul (still protrayed by Ray Park and voiced by Sam Witwer) since his supposed death in Episode I: A Phantom Menace. The movie also introduced new characters to the Star Wars cinematic universe such as Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson), Qi'ra (Emilia Clarke), Val (Thandiwe Newton), L3-37 (Phoebe Waller-Bridge), Dryden Vos (Paul Bettany), Rio Durant (Jon Favreau), Enfys Nest (Erin Kellyman), Lady Proxima (Linda Hunt), Rebolt (Ian Kenny), Korso (John Tui), Weazel (Warwick Davis), Margo (Charlotte Louise), Chanteuse (Sema-Tawi Smart), Ralakili (Clint Howard), Quay Tolsite (Dee Tails), Sagwa (Attila Vajda), Tak (Anthony Daniels), Karjj (Kiran Shah), Eager Scrumrat (Fraser Kelly), Lexi (Lily Newmark), Ottilie (Samantha Colley), and Argus Panox (Derek Arnold). So the very night this came out I took my adorable nerdy partner to see it. As I have mentioned before he is Star Wars obsessed and there was no way I could avoid going to see Solo: A Star Wars Story, so here’s the review.

From what I had heard on the nerd grape vine no one was in any way excited for this film, in fact they had already labelled it a flop. First it was an issue with who they chose for the cast, then the loss of directors and production issues, and the fact that this was an origin story that nobody had asked for, yeah the general public was really selling it to me.

So off we went to the cinema, battling the traffic both there and back and I sighed when the opening credits started rolling, already resigning to the fact this movie would be terrible, and it wasn’t that bad. 

The main issue that had everyone so worried was that Han Solo did not look like Han Solo nor could he ever replicate Harrison Ford’s Han, however I think this worked in Alden Ehrenreich’s favour. The bright side of having a different portrayal of Han means that somewhere along the line things go wrong and he looses that positivity and dream of something better which means there is more to explore before he turns into the Han we know and love, the ending of the film possibly contributes to that change.

I have to admit once I had watched the film I dismissed everything bad people had told me, it wasn’t an awful film, there was nothing to worry about but there was some things that let it down massively for me. 

Emilia Clarke’s character, Oi’ra, felt incredibly unnecessary to the plot line that expands into the overall Star Wars universe. Don’t get me wrong it was a plot that pushed everything into action, but forcing a love story onto a character we know doesn’t need it let the film down, we already knew Han wouldn’t stay with her for some reason or another, and to my knowledge she isn’t mentioned in any other film so it just feels like she was created for the sole purpose of being a love interest, as well as involving the female gender and making women feel empowered through a strong character. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that other than it wasn’t relevant to the plot, I’m not saying Han Solo couldn’t have a lover before Leia, I’m just raising the question; did we really need a very independent character resting on a pointless romantic connection? His life was based around her, just doesn’t add up from what we know of him.

Other than basic plot lines not adding up in the grand network, there was also the issue of lighting/physical film production. I could tell the film was rushed, there was a lot of pressure to get this film out on time, as well as reshoots and all sorts of production mishaps, but I found the first half of the film to be in almost complete darkness, you could hardly see what was happening for some of it and I don’t think the lack of lighting was intentional, you could see the shift in lighting degree later on in the film, places we had visited early on suddenly seemed a little brighter and a lot clearer to the eye. 

Both of those points don’t seem enough, (unless you are a die hard SW fan), to deem this film as terrible, we received some excellent acting from Paul Bettany, Alden Ehrenreich, and Donald Glover, and some top notch character rehashing from Woody Harrelson, don’t get me wrong I love the man to bits but is there a film where he doesn’t drink excessively but in a subtle way or runs some sort of heist/ is on a mission of some sort. It seemed like his usual type of character just on an alien planet. Then there is the delightful Emilia Clarke who I love to pieces as a person and in certain things I just don’t think her talents suited this franchise, she just seemed very out of place and I think that was probably down to her character, but overall it still wasn’t an awful film.

Finally, I rate Solo: A Star Wars Story a 6/10. I probably wouldn’t watch it again in all honesty unless I did a Star Wars marathon and HAD to. Ron Howard has saved this film from being a mess but it is still the spin off nobody wanted and it just didn’t thrill me the same way the other installments have even with the origin of how Han met Chewy and that cool cameo. Sorry.

SPOILER: Why is it that all the cool droids that make me laugh die? Happened in Rogue One too. Makes me sad.
